Quality improvement of vine varieties can be
conducted in two different ways::
- Crossbreeding between varieties or species to obtain new
varieties; these works are conducted by INRA,
- Clonal selection within traditional varieties.
Recent technologies using genetic and in vitro techniques are
still under experimentation. Certified plants are produced with
the clonal selection technique and represent
90% of today’s plantations.
In practice, it consists in :
- Choosing in a vineyard the best existing plants
for each variety,
- Control the sanitary status and evaluate
the viticultural characteristics of the clones
(1 selected plant and propagated = 1 clone),
- Present for certification the clones selected
for their sanitary and agronomic characteristics,
- Propagate the certified clones to supply
the viticultural business with certified plants.
The clonal selection consists of sanitary and agronomic aspects
developed jointly by ENTAV and its regional
partners.
